October Couples Perk- When Did Marriage (Partnering) Become So Hard?
When Did Marriage Become So Hard? This Hidden Brain Podcast is inspiring, informative, and a great conversation starter. Whether you are in a long-term marriage or have just fallen in love, take the time to listen to this podcast. Time, effort, and a growth mindset are needed to create the marriage you want. If you don’t have the time to listen to the entire podcast, you can skip to the love hacks suggested by author Eli Finkel of The All-Or-Nothing Marriage: How the Best Marriages Work, starting around 41minutes into the talk.
Finkel describes love hacks as “… ways that we can try to experience the same relationship but view it in a different way and therefore be a little bit happier in the relationship itself.”
The two love hacks that stood out and fit with our philosophy at The Couples College are:
- Develop a growth mindset rather than a destiny mindset. We can try to make ourselves adopt a more constructive, growth-oriented approach to thinking about conflict in the relationship rather than a more destiny-oriented approach that can often view conflict as a deep sign of incompatibility, and that’s pretty destructive for the relationship.
- Reinterpret negative behavior from your partner in a way that’s more sympathetic rather than critical.
